ADOLESCENT HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: EFFECTS ON MENTAL HEALTH, HEALTH BEHAVIOUR, SOCIAL INTERACTIONS, AND ACADEMIC MOTIVATION AND ACHIEVEMENT, MODERATED BY PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS (2021-2024)

From November 2021, the Institute for Population and Human Studies – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IPHS-BAS) started the implementation of project № КП-06-Н55/7 "Adolescent health and well-being in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: effects on mental health, health behaviour, social interactions, and academic motivation and achievement, moderated by personality characteristics", funded by the Bulgarian National Science Fund (Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria) through Competition for financial support of basic research projects – 2021.

The aim of the project is to examine the impact of changes in the daily lives of Bulgarian adolescents due to the COVID-19 pandemic (infection of the adolescent or of family members, anti-epidemic measures to protect public health, life online, financial insecurity) on their health and well-being, and in particular on their mental health, health behaviour, social interactions and academic motivation and achievement, taking into account the moderating effects of socio-demographic and personality characteristics. We expect that the effects on young people's health and well-being due to changes in their daily lives related to the COVID-19 pandemic will be moderated by socio-demographic and personality characteristics in such a way that for some adolescents the effects will be rather negative, and for other adolescents – rather positive.

To achieve the set goal, a large nationally representative quantitative survey will be conducted with 4,500 young people in early and middle adolescence (11-15 years). The study will include an embedded qualitative component in the form of open-ended questions that explore the subjective perspectives, experiences, and ways of coping of adolescents in a situation of crisis and challenges. Evidence-based guidelines for the prevention and intervention of normative problems of adolescent health and development and problems related to functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic will be developed.

Principal Investigator of the project is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anna Alexandrova-Karamanova (IPHS-BAS, Department of Psychology). The project team includes researchers from the Department of Psychology and the Department of Demography of IPHS-BAS, as well as researchers from Burgas Free University: Prof. Dr. Tatyana Kotzeva (IPHS-BAS, Department of Demography, and BFU), Assoc. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education and Science.
Project leader: Prof. Dr. Yolanda Zografova
Members of the team: Prof. Dr. Antoaneta Hristova, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Diana Bakalova, Assist. Prof. Dr. Victoria Nedeva, Assist. Prof. Dr. Rositsa Racheva, Assist. Prof. Dr.. Zornitsa Totkova, Assist. Prof. Boryan Andreev, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ekaterina Dimitrova.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR 2018
The main goal of the project is to reveal the motivation that underlies aggressive behavior, as well as the factors that are taught in and out of school Wednesday, from the point of view of both students and teachers. An author's methodology has been developed, through which various forms of aggression for students in primary, secondary and upper stages of education have been studied. The study found that the following factors most often affect aggression among students: personal characteristics such as revenge, anger, and the desire for control; deteriorating family environment; friends with problematic behavior outside of school; media ‐ harassment in virtual real social networks and computer games with violence, as well as society's tolerance of violence. Some of them could get the results obtained by teachers, who will show a tendency to transfer the responsibility for aggressive introduction of students outside the school environment, mainly to the family. In addition, it turned out that he often encountered not only isolated cases of aggression, but also whole classes, in which there are frequent conflicts between students, pupils and teachers, bullying and violation of school order.

Post COVID-19 syndrome is a condition characterized by long-term symptoms and complications that continue or develop after acute COVID-19. It has been found the majority (up to 80%) of patients admitted to hospital with severe COVID-19 disease experience long-term physical and psychological symptoms.
The study aims to qualitatively explore the experiences of severe or critical COVID-19 adult survivors throughout the post-acute period (within 1 year post hospital discharge) in four Eastern and Central European countries: Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, and Romania. It will examine both negative (physical and mental health symptoms, cognitive symptoms, post-traumatic stress, difficulties in social functioning, diminished functional ability, etc.) and positive (post-traumatic growth) long-term post COVID effects and will assess the role of survivors' personal (e.g., self-efficacy, resilience, hope, optimism), social (e.g., social support) and other (e.g., financial) coping resources in the recovery period. Relationships between post COVID effects and coping resources, their role in experiencing different roads to recovery, and impact of local sociocultural context and epidemic-related situations in the participating countries will be explored.

VALUES AND BELIEF IN A JUST WORLD (2013-2016)
Head from Bulgarian side: Assoc. Prof. Ergyul Tair, PhD
Partnerships Agreement with University of Paraiba, Brazil
The results supplemented the knowledge of human values by testing the content and structure of new improved model based on the two widely accepted pancultural functions: values as guiding actions (personal, central, or social goals), and express needs (survival or thriving needs). The results presented that the behavior of Bulgarians in greater extent were determined by the values associated with existence (survival), interactive (love, support) and suprapersonal values (beauty, knowledge, maturity). There were found some significant gender, age and ethnic differences in values and belief in a just world that suggest different patterns of socialization. Younger people and men were more oriented toward personal goals and tolerance for injustice, while older and women were more sensitive to injustice and appreciate more interactive, suprapersonal and normative values.

THE DYNAMIC NATURE OF INTERETHNIC ATTITUDES IN BULGARIA: A SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE (2013-2016)
The most significant international project. Is a project implemented within the framework of the Bulgarian-Swiss Research Programme, Agreement No IZEBZ0_142998/1, period of implementation: April 2013- March 2016, coordinated by Dr. Eva Green, Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and Prof. Dr. Yolanda Zografova, Bulgarian team leader on behalf of the Department of Psychology and prof. Antoaneta Hristova, PhD, IPHS-BAS.
The general aim of this project is to deepen the understanding of social psychological processes underlying interethnic attitudes and prejudice of both the Bulgarian majority and of the two major ethnic minorities (Roma and Turks) in contemporary Bulgaria, with reference to the historical, political and normative context in which these attitudes are constructed and enacted. Furthermore, the project examines the irnteractive nature of intergroup attitudes by linking them to actual and perceived relations between the Bulgarian majority population and the Roma and Turkish minorities. The project methodology, developed by both Swiss and Bulgarian teams, employed a mixed methods approach – secondary data analyses of European social surveys data; a cross-sectional survey among 1216 respondents from the Bulgarian majority and the Roma and Turkish minorities across three regions in Bulgaria with differing proportions of ethnic groups by using 3-version questionnaires administered as face-to-face interviews; semi-directive interviews among some of the surveyed respondents.

„Раждаемост и семейни политики";

„Смъртност, стареене и качество на живот";

„Миграции и национална идентичност";

„Демографско развитие и трудови ресурси";

„Уязвими етнически и религиозни групи и общности";
